I was born in Mobile, Alabama and lived there for the first few years of my life. When I was about 4 my family moved to Daphne. Daphne is a small city now, 14 years ago it seemed more like a small town.
When I think of local, I think not so much of a set distance around me, but rather the people and places I am familiar with. I think of Mobile as being local to me. I know people and and places there. The farther into Mobile County I go the more alien it feels. The same goes for the other side of the bay. The small size of Spanish Fort, Daphne, and Fairhope as well as my familiarity with those towns and the people living there have led to me considering all three of the cities to be local to me.
Even though this is my second semester at school here in Tuscaloosa, I still feel like the campus is the only thing here local to me. And only part of the campus at that. I barely know the area, but I am hoping to change that soon.
